Welcome Millie

My cousin and his wife have welcomed their first child to the world yesterday. I found out a little late since my mom *forgot* to tell me, but I managed to call both cousin and wife and offer congratulations soon enough that I didn't appear uninterested in their lives. I really want them to know how happy I am for them, and for them to be able to share openly all of their baby joy.

Babies are a bittersweet topic for me right now. Of course I'm thrilled for anyone having a child (even my unprepared teenage students) but also want a baby of my own so badly that it hurts. I start hormone shots next week and I'm pretty excited about the possibility of it actually working this time. Still, I'm trying not to get my hopes up too high.

In the mean time I'm trying to keep my mind off of children. In the end I really don't have any control over what happens, so I might as well not think about it. I'd rather focus on finishing our bathroom and building the laundry room, and getting ready for my garden. Have I mentioned that I've ordered grape vines and peach and cherry bushes, and even a plum tree? Fedco should send them in less than a month.

Are your peach and cherry bushes actual bushes, or are they dwarf trees?

Just curious. I've never seen them in bush form. I believe one of the little trees we have in our yard is a sour cherry, and I don't remember if we have an actual peach tree or if that was one of a pair that died 2 years ago. We have a bunch of fruit trees, but so far none of them have produced any fruit. I blame the lawn fertilizer that I finally called and canceled last summer (They kept forgetting half the yard and they cost too much in addition to my suspicions about why none of our trees were blooming at all).

Good luck with the hormone shots and all of that. I pray that it works out (and that you don't end up with quadruplets) :)

They're actually bushes! Here's a link to the Fedco description:

Oh, wait I confused the peach bush and the plum tree. It's actually a plum bush...

You have to be careful with fruit trees because they need a pollinator. Even if you have 2 of each (required to pollinate) if you don't have bugs moving pollen from one tree to another you might have to dust your trees during spring.

All prayers are appreciated, especially since it looks like it's going to be a stressful month with my husband gone more than half of the time. Gerd leaves for a week in the Ukraine sometime within the next 2 weeks, comes home for two weeks, and then leaves for Ireland/Germany for 2 weeks. Sadly our schedule doesn't get much better over the summer and we've delayed doing this long enough.

As far as quadruplets, well, I suppose there's always the chance, but we're taking a pretty conservative route. There's about a 40% chance I'll get pregnant, and IF I managed to get pregnant there would be a 30% chance we could have twins.

Of course this all depends on us getting the medicine on time. We've had to transfer our prescriptions 3 times because A) was out of it, B) couldn't bill through our insurance (and wanted to bill us $2,500), and C) hasn't called to set up deliver yet (and we have to have it by Friday).

We've bought our trees mainly through Stark Brothers, which was recommended by a local nursery and isn't too far away from us. The cherry tree we have is supposed to be self-pollinating. One of the apples is actually 3 varieties in one (magic grafting) and they are supposed to polinate each other. We have a Fuji apple tree bought at Lowes like 7 years ago that has actually fruited once (2 years ago). I'm not sure which tree is polinating it--the crabapple on the side of our house or something else in the neighborhood.

We have 2 additional fruit trees in the yard and I *think* they're peaches. I think we tried planting plums and they died off in a bad freeze. But I could be backwards. None of the fruit trees except that Fuji have ever flowered, let alone produced fruit. We do have bees and the occasional hummingbird, so pollinators aren't the problem. But I suspect that the mix of fertilizer that was supposed to be good for (the evil) grass was not encouraging the trees to flower. I'm hoping they've got great roots though...

That's a bunch of fruit trees! I hope they start producing fruit for you after laying off the fertilizer. Have you tested the soil to see if their ph levels are right for the trees? All of the trees you've mentioned like a ph level of 6-7, but that's actually the same ph level for a lawn. Anyway, good luck!
